Alumni Profile: Nicole Buss

Alumna Nicole Buss '02, was very happy to learn that the College now offers a bachelor's degree in psychology. "I earned my A.A in psychology at Marymount, which allowed me to hit the ground running. Graduate programs require many prerequisites so a B.A will open lots of doors a lot sooner for psychology students," she says. Buss should know- she recently earned her doctorate in occupational therapy from the University of Southern California.

Buss now works at the Pediatric Therapy Network, a nonprofit children's therapy center in Torrance, California, that is committed to providing quality services for children with special needs. "I work in early intervention with a lot of children with autism and other special needs. We help them learn how to participate in school activities, play and do things in daily life. Whatever is meaningful in life to the child and family, we'll help them figure out a strategy to make it happen," she says.

A San Pedro native, Buss' interest in her field came from her mother, who teaches special education. This prompted her to volunteer at the center where she now works. "Volunteering was a really big deal for me. You really have to get in there and get your hands dirty, because then you can ask yourself, 'Can i see myself    doing this?" Buss says.

She credits the professors at Marymount with encouraging her to follow her path, while still providing her with a "reality check" occasionally along the way. "They were always very accessible, and that made a huge difference," Buss says.

Marymount Announces Proposed Master’s Degree Programs

Marymount College President Dr. Michael Brophy announced today the proposal of two new master’s degrees for the College: a Master of Science in Community Psychology and a Master of Science in Leadership and Community Development for a fall 2013 launch. These master’s degree programs are pending approval from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
“Marymount College is committed to providing educational degree programs that benefit our students and the community,” said Dr. Brophy.  “A master’s degree is becoming increasingly important in today’s ultracompetitive job market. And since our goal has always been to offer courses that will give our students an edge in the workplace and beyond, the next logical step is for us to offer master’s degree programs.”
Students who have completed their bachelor’s degree may enroll in the master’s program.  However, an attractive option for undergraduate students is the ability to complete a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree within five years of study. The following five-year degree pathways will be offered:
A Bachelor of Arts (BA) Degree in Psychology with a Master of Science (MS) in Community Psychology; BA in Liberal Arts with an MS in Community Psychology; BA in Business with an MS in Community Psychology; BA in Business with an MS in Leadership and Community Development; BA in Liberal Arts with an MS in Leadership and Community Development; and a BA in Psychology with an MS in Leadership and Community Development.
The application deadline for fall 2013 enrollment is March 1, 2013.
The College currently offers bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts, Media Studies, Business and Psychology at its two campuses located in Rancho Palos Verdes and San Pedro.
