Alumni Profile: John Vandever
As a part of the first graduating class from Marymount College in 2012, John Vandever says, “At first I felt that being part of a first graduating class would be nothing special. However, considering how fast Marymount is moving and growing, I know that one day I will proudly be able to say that I was at the beginning of something special.” John recognizes that being the first class is not always easy, mentioning that there were uncertain times as the program took shape, but “the end result was a well-rounded experience.”
Vandever believes that the faculty at Marymount is directly credited with the success the programs have received, and help the students to reach whatever potential they desire. One of the most influential members of the Marymount community during John’s experience was Professor Rex Draman. “His open ended style of lecture, although sometimes frustrating, prepared me for what lies after graduation.”
Currently, John works as a loan officer at Prospect Mortgage, receiving the position one month after graduation and finished first in his training class amongst co-workers from many of the top Southern California universities. “The open ended nature and complexity of the capstone project”, Vandever says, “taught me how to survive in the complicated world of loans.” Because of the abundance learned in his short two years at Marymount and the capstone process, John shares lots of advice with the students at Marymount. “To the seniors or future seniors contemplating their Capstone projects: bite off more than you can chew, pick something outside your comfort zone, and try to make your project relate to your preferred job field. Even if you fall short of your high goals, you will have a heck of a story to tell the person interviewing you. You would be surprised how quickly they pass over the school you attended and GPA. Your experiences and ability to communicate the way you solve problems will leave you ahead of the competition.”
John is excited to hear about the growth and change Marymount has experienced in his short time away. “I am surprised by how quickly Marymount is growing. I know with this quick pace that Marymount will continue to move in the positive direction that the faculty and staff have been pushing towards.”
Alumni Profile: Alexa Ardeljan-Braden
Alexa Ardeljan-Braden, currently a story editor for Radical Studios, believes the people she met at Marymount are directly credited with her growth. A student with exceptional involvement at Marymount, as ASMC Student Body President, PTK, Marymount Lacrosse, and much more, Alexa finds her two years to be a very shaping time.
Following her graduation at Marymount in 2010, where Alexa won the Elan Award, she continued her education, earning her BA, at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. Alexa recently moved companies, joining film development at Radical Studios as a story editor. Although she finds her current career to be a “complete change of pace and an absolute dream”, Ardeljan-Braden still aspires to be a film producer.
Alexa is very excited for Marymount after learning about the large amount of growth Marymount is offering their current students, first with the bachelor programs and now graduate programs. She mentioned many faculty members who influenced her throughout her time at Marymount and wants to tell students that “the years you spend at Marymount will be much more formative than you might imagine.”
Alumni Profile: Caroline Holmes
Caroline Holmes, class of 2008, recalls her years at Marymount fondly. Holmes believes that Marymount gives students, like herself, “another chance to perform well and do all of the things that they are capable of doing."
Her favorite memory from Marymount was Dr. Zanca’s philosophy class, where she was presented a copy of On Truth, by Harry G. Frankfort, in recognition of an excellent job. Caroline says, “Professor Zanca probably didn’t know this at the time, but that was the first recognition of academic achievement I had received since grade school.” And from that moment, she saw her life change.

Caroline says, “Professor Zanca probably didn’t know this at the time, but that was the first recognition of academic achievement I had received since grade school.” And from that moment, she saw her life change.
It is evident that Marymount encouraged Caroline to recharge her academic career and grow as an individual. After graduating from Marymount with an associate’s degree with a concentration in psychology, Holmes enrolled in USC, earning her Bachelor of Science in Psychology, summa cum laude. Participating in the Department of Psychology’s Honors Program, she worked with the Center for Research on Crime and wrote a thesis on youth gang prevention.
Following her graduation from USC, Caroline found herself across town, enrolling at UCLA’s School of Law in September of 2011. Since joining law school, she has had many opportunities, becoming the social chair of the Student Bar Association UCLA Chapter, and working as articles editor for the Dukeminier Awards Journal of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Law.
Caroline says, “All of this, and I mean all of it, was possible because of Marymount, and I will always have a deep appreciation for the staff and teachers that work so hard to help students to achieve their full potential.”
Alumni Profile: Bob and Tina Kennedy
Bob and Tina (O’Dell) Kennedy met in September of 1980, shortly after enrolling at Marymount College. Tina remembers the days when she would gaze fondly upon Santa Catalina Island from her classrooms. Little did she know, Catalina would soon become her home.
While studying at Marymount, Tina found herself working at the preschool, surrounding herself in the unique environment of early childhood education Marymount offered. An individual of particular influence was Virginia Wade, who Tina found to be “an awesome teacher, co-worker, and friend”, looking up to her as a great role model. After graduating, Tina attended classes to earn her child care director certificate, and together Bob and Tina attended United States Coast Guard captain courses.
Today, Bob and Tina are parents to four daughters; the youngest graduating from high school this coming June. Tina is the preschool director for P.L.A.Y., Preschool Learning for Avalon Youth, where she has worked for the past 29 years. Bob was recently reelected for a fourth consecutive term as Mayor of Catalina, and is considering retirement. Twenty-eight years ago, Bob and Tina opened their full service dive shop, Catalina Scuba Luv, where they “have met many wonderful people from around the world, as well as many of the 800 species located under our beautiful waters on Catalina Island.”
Looking back on their experience, Bob and Tina found Marymount to be a school where they flourished, making longtime friends and contacts. Tina advises current students that “when things get tough, take a walk, look at the beautiful surroundings and count your blessings!”, and Bob says, “stay focused and enjoy the vacation from your parents.” They are happy to hear about Marymount’s changes and encourage it to keep growing!

Great News for Marymount!
Last week WASC approved MCU's first graduate programs! M.S. programs in Community Psychology and Leadership and Community Development begin in August as we make the transition to University status.
Special thanks to Provost Schauer and the faculty and staff who developed this application. Once again, WASC gave MCU high marks for the thought and planning that was devoted to this endeavor.
It is hard to believe that just four years ago Marymount hadn’t yet submitted the application for four-year status. This recent development is yet one more tribute to everyone who has helped Marymount develop a winning story with great momentum.

The play tells the story of Catherine, the daughter of Robert, a recently deceased mathematical genius in his fifties and professor at the University of Chicago, following her struggle with mathematical genius and mental illness. Catherine had cared for her father through a lengthy mental illness. Upon Robert's death, his ex-graduate student Hal discovers a paradigm-shifting proof about prime numbers in Robert's office. The title refers both to that proof and to the play's central question: Can Catherine prove the proof's authorship? The play explores Catherine's fear of following in her father's footsteps, both mathematically and mentally and her desperate attempts to stay in control.

Mission Week at Marymount!
This upcoming week is Mission Week at Marymount! Monday, March 18th, and Tuesday, March 19th, Mission Week will be celebrating Marymount’s Heritage and Guiding Mission with a lecture and a Fair Trade Fair.
On Monday, Dr. Brian Treanor will be in the Main Campus Chapel at 5 p.m. to present “A Wider Ethic of Life: Faith, Virtue, and Environmental Crisis”. Dr. Brian Treanor is Director of Environmental Studies and Associate Professor at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. His work covers issues in environmental philosophy, ethics, and philosophy of religion.
This lecture covers a study of history, literature and art that shows the great spiritual connection human beings have with nature and the wider world. Religious traditions emphasize human interconnectedness and point out the moral obligation to care for nature. What can religious and philosophical thought, particularly the Catholic understanding of “Virtue,” contribute to action around issues of environmental ethics and sustainability? Many of the “individual” virtues have significant environmental or social benefit; and many “environmental” virtues have individual benefits. Is there a relationship between “saving the earth” and “saving souls”? Come join us on Monday, at the Chapel at 5 to hear more!
Tuesday, March 19th at C-hour, the Fair Trade Fair will be underway. “Global Gifts” of San Pedro and “Ten Thousand Villages” of Pasadena will be there with a selection of skillfully handmade gifts from around the world. Every item purchased helps provide vital, fair income to artisans and their families. Fair Trade practices encourage environmentally friendly and sustainable practices, while brining dignity and opportunity to global communities.

Rotaract: Giving Hands and Caring Acts
Marymount College Rotaract is a student service organization dedicated to participating in community service and focused on developing young adults as leaders. We are always finding ways to put service above self, and the events we partake in reflect just that.
The fall 2012 semester was a very successful time of involvement for Marymount College Rotaract. Among other efforts, we raised money for Polio and packaged books for schools.
“Pennies for Polio” is a program that raises money for the total eradication of polio. Through this program, Marymount College Rotarians were able to learn about polio and the impact of this physically debilitating disease. We learned that polio is 99 percent eradicated and that a mere .60 cents is the cost of the vaccine used to protect one child from Polio. This disease is most prevalent in Nigeria, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.
During “End Polio Now” week, the Rotaract Club stationed themselves on campus to collect donations from passing students and faculty. We gave out purple cotton candy and purple-frosted brownies and cupcakes to those who donated because purple is the color used to mark the pinky of a child who was vaccinated. We are proud to announce that in one week, Rotaract Club was able to raise over $185 for Pennies for Polio.
Rotaract Club also had the opportunity to volunteer for the Molina Foundation’s “Book Buddies” by helping to package books. The Molina Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing lives through literacy and education. Marymount Rotaract packaged children’s books that were shipped all over the United States. Volunteering for “Book Buddies” was also a chance for Rotaract to interact with other organizations and community volunteers.
Did you know that 40 percent of the entire homeless population is under 18, and that 42 percent of those minors are younger than six years old? This startling statistic is what prompted us to help the homeless children in any way we could. Rotaract decided to become involved through the “Toys for Tots Drive” and “Toys for Tecate.” With the help of Marymount College, we were able to set up designated containers throughout the campus for the donation of toys. We collected nearly 80 toys, which were successfully delivered to “Toys for Tots” and “Harbor Interfaith.”
“Festival de Corazon” was Rotaract’s last volunteer event of the fall 2012 semester. “Festival de Corazon” was an event where people auctioned off their own valuable possessions and services. Rotaract helped out by setting up and handling transactions. The formal event was a joyous occasion full of Mexican food and entertainment.

Alumni Profile: Tiffany Rados
“It is hard to put into words a time that I believe has so thoroughly shaped who I am today. My time at Marymount College was never lacking in excitement, adventure, and courage” says Tiffany Rados. Rados attended Marymount from 2008-2010, then transferred to Loyola Marymount University to complete a Bachelor’s degree in English.
Rados joined the Marymount London program for the summer of 2008, and recalls sightseeing experiences that would change her life. “As an English Major, one of the most stirring events took place in Westminster Abby. Actually standing in Poet’s Corner between the graves and memorials of powerhouse authors’ such as Tennyson, Austen, Dickenson, Chaucer, Eliot, and the Bronte Sisters remains one of the most impactful experiences of my life.”
Tiffany built relationships with faculty members that would later become her mentors, and very dear friends. She also believes that the London summer abroad instilled “the need to break out of my comfort zone and experience all that life has to offer.”
Rados currently works as an Academic Advisor for Argosy University Los Angeles, thanking Marymount with her passion for higher education administration. As a student worker at Marymount, Rados says that “the experience has provided me with the skills necessary to perform on a professional level.”
Rados is very excited to hear about Marymount’s expansion and says that if it had been a four-year college during her time, she would have stayed. Her recommendation to current students is simple: take chances. “Do any and everything that scares you because it will turn out to be a memorable experience,” she says.

"Mike has worked extremely hard to acheive this accomplishment" states coach Matin Gonzalez. Athletic Director Gary White states, "the excitement continues to grow at Marymount within our Athletic Department and to have athletes in two new programs qualify for the National Championships is very exciting."
We congratulate and wish Mike the best of luck! Go Mariners!
